McDonald’s: Who's Eating the Hamburgers? (Part 2)

 Over 99 Billion Served
The billboards are everywhere. Under the golden arches they declare McDonald’s presence in our daily lives, a reminder of what makes us American and universal. The billboards boasts “Over 99 Billion Served.” Yet, many people deny they eat McDonald’s food. Who is eating all the hamburgers?

I do McDonald's hamburgers!

I’ve discovered that some people are “McCloset” eaters because they are scared to let others know how much they love McFoods. They will swear on their mothers’ graves they’ve never eaten a Big Mac or Cheese Burger. Some, when you catch them eating McFood, they lament they had a relapse. Some sneak through the drive thru, order their meals, and chomp it down quickly. Some sit quietly in restaurants and quietly eat in a town not close to their hometown, but once they arrive home, you always catch them because they wear that Ronald McDonald McHappy satisfied grin on their faces.

I once met a guy at a McDonald’s restaurant and we started chatting. I learned he was a travelling business man, and he said he was just in the restaurant for the salad. Uhn. It’s true he was eating a nice looking chicken salad, but the guilty look on his face told me he had been eating more than salads. Another person told me she only drank the coffee because “It’s good and it’s cheap.” Uhn. I wanted to say, just admit you’re a regular McCustomer because you can’t walk into McDonald’s and just buy a single item. No functioning nostrils would allow you to leave the seductive aroma all around. You have to get the fries, an apple pie—something. That’s how it is for me.

Responsible McEaters
Let’s face the fact. We are, for the most part, eating McDonald’s whether we admit it or not. McDonald’s didn’t sell over 99 billion hamburgers to aliens from Mars. We love the food. Sometimes we hate the things we love for different reasons. Guilt. Others make you feel guilty. If you love McDonald’s food, you should eat it, but eat responsibly.

McDonald’s, like all businesses, want you to love, enjoy, and buy its products, but use your discretion.

I could eat McDonald’s food every day for one month, as there are plenty of choices that allow me to be selective. And I would be OK. Dare me. I already eat McDonald’s food at least once per week.

    1. You're a backslider, Pat. You need to repent and eat again.

  3. School field trips always go to McD's for lunch because their menu is so diverse.

I like McD's because of the dollar menu - McChicken Sandwich.

    1. Nothing better than a dollar meal when you're on a tight budget. I've been enjoying those McChicken sandwiches, too. Too cheap and tasty to resist.

  4. It's been quite a while since I ate at a McDonald's, and I swear I'm not a closet McEater. When Favorite Young Man lived with me, he said he was a vegetarian. But when he went out drinking, the next day a quarter pounder package would be in the garbage. He was a McDrinker.

    Love,
    Janie

  5. That's funny - closet McDonald's eaters! My family is not one of them. We used to visit McDonald's quite frequently when my kids were little. Not so much anymore. They've become a little more health-conscious.

    1. You can teach them to make healthy choices wherever they go, including McDonald's.

  6. There is a McDonald's that is 1.5 miles of my house in one direction and 3 miles in the other, so my kids and I have our weekly visit. One of my daughters have given it up though; too fattening, I suppose.

And speaking of other things besides the hamburgers, or fish sandwiches that I like, I also love the hotcakes and sausage! :)

  7. I love the burgers and french fries in McDonald's. My kid too love it. We use to visit the shop monthly once.

  8. McDonald's failed in Jamaica and I'm one of the reasons why. Yes the big macs were really good but they were small and their regular burgers just didn't hit it with me at all. Burger King all the way. Normal sized burgers and no matter the size or type they taste great. People are ashamed of what they can't acknowledge.

    1. Sheena, one day when I open my McDonald's in Jamaica, I'll give you double cheese burgers. Jamaicans are too greedy (lol), including me. But the food is already cheap, maybe customers could buy an extra burger.

  9. Well Peaches, I think that everyone has eaten at McDonalds at least once and I believe also the ones who say no, secretely go there. Nowadays, I went often to McCafe, I enjoy their stuff even though in my city the place is very small. Have a lovely day dear, kisses! xo

    1. Lilli, you hit the nail on its head. I don't know who created this stigma. It's like, "Don't tell anyone you eat at McDonald's." I don't understand. People eat from trucks and they eat all kinds of junk, but they won't admit they eat at a very good place.

  10. It's true that no matter what we eat, we should do so responsibly. I know that if I ate burgers for lunch everyday for a week, I'd be packing on the pounds by weekend.

    1. So true, Joy. We blame who we want to, instead of being responsible.

  11. After watching Super Size Me, I have a time with almost any fast food. If I go that route, I usually hit Subway instead. Very rarely will I cave into a McD's craving.

    1. Julie, if you are not careful about what you eat anywhere, you could become another Super Size Me. If you eat a 12-inch sub everyday and more than once per day, you will pack on pounds. I don't buy into every gimmick.

  12. I remember the last day I consumed McDonalds. It was the morning of my GRE. I hate some chicken nuggets...that was two years ago. lol. I'm not a fan of McDonalds...it's the smell of the food, though I might be tempted to try McDonalds in another country (the restaurants smell better).

    1. Ashley, was the meal satisfying after completing your GRE. My mom ate McDonald's food when she was sick because she found comfort in it. No medicine could have given her the good feelings she experienced after receiving radiation or chemotherapy.

  13. High fives! Love it. I am an unrepentant lover of fast food. I don't care if I'm not as cool as the Sushi eaters, I love a good cheeseburger!

  14. We used to love McDonalds. Then my hubby got a BIG raise. Now we eat Firehouse Subs and Chick Fil-A if we're having fast food.

    1. You have to return to McDonald's,Crystal, the food is calling you. You'll blow all your money away at the other places. Repent and McDonald's will forgive you for straying.

    2. LOL! It's all about the Happy Meals for us. The kids all want their new toy at the end of the meal, and I have to admit, those little toys can be pretty epic.

  15. I may be the exception here. My hubby and I are vegetarians, and we don't eat at McDonalds. The fast food that tempts us is Guacamole. Love that stuff!

  17. I've never really liked McDonald's, I have eaten there on occasion, but not that often. And I'm not saying this guilty, I don't eat out very much, at all! I do pick McDonald's a lot when traveling though becasue my kids need to stretch in the play place. The food isn't bad tasting, it's just not my thing. That being said, I do see their drive-thru's constantly busy, so I know people eat their a lot whether or not they admit it :)

    1. It's always busy. I visited a restaurant in Chicago and there are two drive-thru lanes instead of one and the lines are still long.

  21. I love this post! I do like McDonald's but even my husband doesn't know. I go there occasionally then sit in my car and enjoy my Mcnuggets and fries. I throw everything in the garbage before I leave then drive with my windows open to get rid of the smell. I go about once a month. Not sure if that is responsible or not. OK, sometimes I go twice a month.

  25. While living in NYC I met way too many "McCloset Eaters." I once overheard an acquaintance say, "I was so drunk last night, I ate McDonald's." Glad there are people out there who will eat it proudly :) Can't beat those fries or hash browns.
